A touching and beautiful tale about a wise kookaburra who helps a young boy navigate the sadness of loss. Through a simple search for missing glasses, Kooka reveals the powerful magic of memories and how they keep our loved ones close forever. This story is a gentle embrace for any child learning about grief, love, and the enduring bond of the heart.
A wise kookaburra named Kooka sat high in a large, leafy gum tree at the local park. From his silver-grey branch, he watched the children running, laughing, and playing in the bright afternoon sun.
Among the happy crowd, Kooka noticed a young boy sitting all alone on a weathered wooden bench. The boy's head was down, and he was beginning to cry, his small shoulders shaking with a quiet sadness.
Kooka fluttered down from his high perch and landed softly on the bench right next to the boy. With a gentle tilt of his head and a kind look in his eyes, he asked the boy what was making him so unhappy.
The boy sniffled and explained that he had lost his glasses and couldn't find them anywhere in the big park. Kooka smiled warmly and told the boy that if he thought really, really hard, he might remember where he put them.
The boy sighed, saying that some things, like his beloved Pop who had passed away, are gone forever. He felt a deep ache in his chest because he could no longer see the person he loved most in the world.
Kooka shared a special secret, explaining that when you lose someone you love, they aren't truly lost at all. He told the boy that we just have to learn how to find our loved ones in a different, special way.
Kooka described how memories are like a permanent, cozy home in our hearts for those we love. Even if we can't give them a physical hug, thinking of the times spent together keeps them with us forever and ever.
Thinking about his Pop reminded the boy of a time his grandfather tucked a lost tooth into his pocket to keep it safe. Suddenly, he reached into his own pocket and felt his glasses, tucked away safely just like the tooth had been.
A bright, joyful smile broke across the boy's face as he realized his memories had helped him twice today. He felt happy to have his glasses back and deeply comforted knowing his Pop would always live safely in his heart.
Kooka flew back to his gum tree and let out a loud, joyous laugh that echoed through the trees. Nearby, a stranger heard the sound and smiled, suddenly remembering a dear friend with a big laugh who lived in their heart.

Leave text exactly as follows; provide illustrations A kookaburra sat in a big gum tree at the park, watching the children laughing and playing. He saw a boy by himself, beginning to cry. He flew down and sat next to the boy. “What’s wrong?” he asked. “I’ve lost my glasses, and I can’t find them,” said the boy. The kookaburra smiled at the boy. “Losing things is hard, but some things we lose we can find again. If you think really, really hard, you might remember where you put your glasses. My name is Kooka, and I can help you”. The boy smiled at Kooka and said, “But some things we lose are gone forever”. “That’s right, some things are gone forever” said Kooka. “Like when we lose people we love” the boy said. “Sometimes people die, and they are gone away forever, like my Pop. It’s sad when we can’t see them anymore”. “That’s true” said Kooka. “But I’ll tell you a secret. When you lose somebody you love, they are never really lost forever. We just find them in a different way”. “What do you mean?” said the boy. “You can’t find somebody that’s not here anymore. That’s impossible”. Kooka thought for a minute. “Well…. when we remember things, it’s called a memory. We can’t give people we love a hug anymore when they die, but every time we think of them or remember times we spent together, they will always have a home in our heart. Our memories will keep them here with us forever and ever. So, they are never really lost when they are safe in our heart”. The boy sat and thought for a moment. “Memories…. Well, I remember when I lost my tooth, and my Pop wrapped it up for me and put it in my pocket to keep it safe and MY POCKET! I put my glasses in my pocket. I remembered! I put them there to keep them safe while I was at the park”. The boy smiled, happy that he found what he had lost and happy that his memories would keep his Pop in his heart forever. Kooka smiled, said goodbye to the boy, and flew back to his tree. He remembered the people he kept in his heart. He laughed his big laugh. And somewhere nearby, somebody heard that kookaburra laugh, and they smiled because they remembered a friend they had lost. A friend with a big laugh, who now lives in their memory and heart forever and ever.
