Gluko entered the Glycolysis Gate, where magical worker enzymes awaited. They began breaking him down, earning two glowing ATP coins! This process happens without oxygen and is called anaerobic respiration.
Next, Gluko traveled to the Pyruvate Path, where more enzymes transformed him. This stage, called Pyruvate Oxidation, prepped him for the grandest adventure yet. Carbon dioxide was released, like smoke from a tiny chimney.
Gluko bravely entered the Citric Acid Cycle Arena, a swirling vortex of activity. Enzymes spun him around, releasing more ATP coins and important molecules. It was a dazzling display of cellular teamwork!
The important molecules from the Citric Acid Cycle Arena were ushered towards the Electron Transport Chain. This was located in the inner membrane folds of the mitochondria. The inner membrane folds are called cristae.
The Electron Transport Chain was a series of powerful pumps. As electrons flowed, protons were pumped into the intermembrane space. This created a high concentration gradient.
The protons rushed back across the membrane through a special enzyme called ATP synthase. This process, called chemiosmosis, generated a huge amount of ATP. It was a true energy explosion!
With a mountain of ATP coins, Gluko returned to Cellville a hero. He had successfully completed aerobic respiration, requiring oxygen. If oxygen wasn't present, anaerobic respiration (fermentation) would occur, yielding much less ATP.
The glowing ATP coins were distributed throughout Cellville, powering every corner of the kingdom. Gluko learned that the mitochondria, with its inner and outer membranes, was the true powerhouse.
