The Awakening of the Island Giant

Elian lives on a vibrant, emerald island surrounded by a sparkling turquoise sea. The villagers believe their home is the back of a great, sleeping giant who provides them with fertile soil and abundant fruit.

Every morning, Elian and his friends climb the lower slopes to leave garlands of bright hibiscus flowers near the mountain's mist-covered peak. They sing songs of gratitude, believing the soft mountain breezes are the giant's gentle breaths.

One afternoon, while Elian is picking mangoes, the ground suddenly shudders beneath his feet. High above, flocks of colorful parrots scream and take flight, heading far away toward the open ocean.

A thin ribbon of dark smoke begins to curl from the very top of the mountain, smudging the perfect blue sky. The air grows heavy and smells of sulfur, and the usual chatter of the jungle falls into an eerie silence.

The village elders gather in the square, their faces grave as they watch the mountain's changing mood. They tell stories of the last time the giant stirred and realize it is time to seek safety across the waves.

Elian visits his favorite spring to find the water bubbling and murky, turning the white stones a strange shade of orange. The heat radiating from the ground makes the soles of his feet tingle with a warning.

Families work together to pack their sturdy outrigger canoes with seeds, tools, and cherished memories. Elian looks back at his small hut one last time, feeling a mixture of sadness and awe at the mountain's growing power.

As the fleet of boats paddles away from the shore, a deep roar echoes across the water like a thousand drums. The sky turns charcoal grey, and glowing red rivers of lava begin to crawl down the giant's slopes.

From the safety of the distant horizon, Elian watches the spectacular display of fire and ash lighting up the night sky. The giant is fully awake now, reshaping the land with its fiery breath in a magnificent dance of destruction and creation.

Seasons pass, and the ash eventually cools, turning into the richest soil the villagers have ever seen. Elian, now older, leads the boats back to the shore to plant the first seeds on their brand-new, expanded home.
