The Donkey and the Giraffe

Oliver the little gray donkey loved walking through the sunny valley, chewing on sweet green grass. He often looked up at the sky, wondering what the beautiful world looked like from high above.

One afternoon, Oliver met Gilly, a towering giraffe with a long neck and beautiful golden spots. Gilly was trying to reach the juiciest leaves at the very top of an acacia tree but kept slipping on the loose stones below.

Seeing Gilly struggle, Oliver trotted over and used his strong hooves to clear away the sharp rocks and stabilize the ground. With a firm footing, Gilly easily reached the delicious leaves and happily shared them with her new friend.

As they walked together, a sudden breeze blew Oliver’s favorite straw hat high up into the branches of a massive baobab tree. Oliver sighed sadly, realizing he was far too short to ever reach it.

Gilly smiled kindly, gently stretched her long neck upward, and picked up the hat with her teeth. She placed it carefully back on Oliver’s head, making the little donkey bray with pure joy.

Later that day, a thick mist began to roll across the valley, completely hiding the path back to the meadow. Gilly could see clearly above the fog, but she could no longer see the small stones and roots right in front of her feet.

Oliver used his sharp ears and keen sense of smell to guide Gilly safely through the low, blurry path. Meanwhile, Gilly looked out from above the mist to make sure they were heading in the right direction toward home.

Working as a perfect team, the two friends safely navigated through the dense fog and reached the edge of the bright, open meadow just as the sun began to set.

They sat together under the warm orange sky, realizing that their differences made them stronger together. What Oliver lacked in height, he made up for in sturdiness, and what Gilly lacked in ground-view, she made up for with her grand vision.

As the stars began to twinkle in the night sky, Oliver and Gilly curled up side by side, grateful for a friendship that allowed them to see the world from both the ground and the heavens.
