Ten-year-old Kai lived for the ocean, spending every free moment checking the tide charts and waxing his favorite neon-green surfboard. His room in the sleepy coastal town of Driftwood Bay was cluttered with surf trophies, sea glass, and posters of legendary big-wave riders.
