Ari’s Journey Through the Haggadah

Ari helps his mother set the long dining table with a crisp white cloth and sparkling silver. In the center sits the Seder plate, filled with symbolic foods like a roasted bone, a hard-boiled egg, and bitter herbs.

Grandma lights the festive candles, her hands moving in gentle circles as she welcomes the holiday. The warm golden light fills the room, signaling the beginning of a night filled with ancient stories and family songs.

Everyone gathers around as Zayde lifts the first cup of wine, reciting the Kiddush with a deep, melodic voice. Ari holds his small silver cup of sweet grape juice, feeling the importance of the first of four special toasts.

Ari dips a sprig of green parsley into a bowl of salt water, remembering the tears of his ancestors in Egypt. The salty taste reminds him that even in spring's new growth, we must never forget the hardships of the past.

Zayde takes the middle piece of Matzah and breaks it in two with a crisp, loud snap. He wraps the larger half in a silk napkin and secretly hides it away, sparking a mischievous and excited glint in Ari’s eyes.

Standing tall at the head of the table, Ari clears his throat to ask the Four Questions in a clear, confident voice. He asks why this night is different from all other nights, and the whole family listens with proud smiles.

The Haggadah comes alive as the family recounts the story of the Exodus and the miraculous parting of the deep blue sea. Ari imagines the walls of water towering high as his ancestors walked through the seabed toward their freedom.

They eat the crunchy Matzah and the spicy Maror, experiencing the physical taste of both slavery and liberation. Ari crinkles his nose at the sharp bite of the horseradish, understanding the bitterness his ancestors once endured.

After the festive meal, the grand hunt begins as Ari searches every corner of the living room for the hidden Afikomen. He finally finds the wrapped Matzah tucked behind a velvet pillow, winning a small prize and a big hug from Zayde.

The door is opened for the Prophet Elijah, and a cool night breeze wafts into the house under the starlit sky. The family sings songs of praise and hope, ending the Seder with the joyful promise of next year in Jerusalem.
