Max and the Ten-Second Pause

The morning sun peeked through Max's window, but he was already a whirlwind of energy. His room was a playful jumble of toys and clothes as he scrambled to get ready, a little late as usual.

Rushing down the hallway, Max tripped over his own feet. His arms flailed wildly, and his breakfast-bound face was hurtling straight for the polished wooden floor.

Panic surged through him. In a desperate, high-pitched squeak, Max yelled, “WAIT!” His eyes squeezed shut, bracing for the inevitable thud.

But the thud never came. Max slowly opened one eye, then the other. His sister, Lily, was frozen mid-eye-roll at the kitchen doorway. Buster, their fluffy dog, hung in the air, a furry balloon with a suspended tail wag.

A single dust bunny floated perfectly still, and the cheerful chirping of birds outside had vanished. Max stood upright, a strange, wide-eyed wonder spreading across his face as he began to count in his head: One… two… three…

At the count of ten, with a comical 'POP!', time snapped back into motion. Max slammed onto the floor with a cartoonish thud, Buster landed with a soft 'woof', and Lily's eye-roll finally completed with a sigh.

Later that day, in his room, Max decided to test his incredible discovery. He dropped a bouncy ball, yelled “WAIT!”, and watched it freeze mid-air. Counting to ten, he giggled as it dropped precisely when time resumed.

The next day at school, Max found himself bored during a long math lesson. His eyes wandered, spotting a wobbly juice box on his friend Leo's desk, dangerously close to tipping over onto his new drawing.

With a silent, quick thought, Max yelled “WAIT!” in his head. The world paused. He swiftly reached out, nudged the juice box upright, and then released the pause with a mischievous grin. Leo never even noticed.

Walking home, Max bounced with excitement. His heart swelled with the thrill of his secret ten-second power. He imagined all the fun and helpful ways he could use it, his mind buzzing with endless possibilities.
