The Speedy Hare and the Steady Tortoise

In a sunny meadow lived Herbert the Hare, who loved to boast about how fast he could run. He would zoom past all his friends with a big grin on his face.

One day, Herbert saw Tilly the Tortoise slowly munching on a juicy leaf. Herbert laughed and said, 'You are so slow, Tilly! You'll never get anywhere fast!'

Tilly, a very kind and wise tortoise, looked up. 'Perhaps I am slow, Herbert, but I am steady. Why don't we have a race?' she suggested calmly.

Herbert gasped, then giggled. 'A race with you, Tilly? That's the funniest thing I've ever heard! But alright, let's race to the big oak tree on the hill!'

The next morning, all the forest animals gathered. The fox waved a flag, and the race began! Herbert shot off like a rocket, leaving Tilly far behind.

Herbert ran so fast that soon he couldn't even see Tilly. He thought, 'Tilly is so slow, I have plenty of time for a nap!' He found a cozy spot under a bush and fell asleep.

Meanwhile, Tilly kept walking, one slow step after another. She didn't stop, she didn't rush, she just kept going, steady and determined.

Hours passed. Herbert woke up with a start! He stretched and yawned, then looked around. 'Oh no!' he cried, realizing how much time he had wasted.

Herbert started to run as fast as his legs could carry him, but it was too late. As he neared the finish line, he saw a small, familiar shell.

Tilly the Tortoise, with a gentle smile, had just crossed the finish line! All the animals cheered for Tilly, who proved that slow and steady truly wins the race.
