If You Give a Grandpa a Hug

If you give a Grandpa a big morning hug, he is going to ask for a favorite book to read together on the porch. He will settle into his rocking chair and pat his lap so you have the best seat for the story.

When he reads the story about the brave lion in the jungle, you will probably want to find your golden paper crown to wear. You will search through the toy chest until you find the perfect royal accessory.

Since you are now a royal king, you will definitely need a royal feast of Grandma’s warm blueberry muffins. The kitchen will fill with the sweet smell of baking as she lets you help stir the batter.

Once you finish the muffins, you will notice the blue spots on your fingers and want to paint a colorful masterpiece at the kitchen table. You will reach for the big brushes and the brightest jars of paint you can find.

When the painting is finally dry, Grandma will want to hang it on the fridge with a shiny star magnet. You will stand back together to admire the beautiful colors and the way they brighten up the room.

Looking at the fridge will remind everyone that it is time to go outside and pick some bright daisies from the garden. You will grab a small woven basket and skip out the back door into the sunshine.

While you are in the garden, you will see a yellow butterfly and decide to chase it all the way to the old tire swing. Grandpa will give you a gentle push until your toes almost touch the leaves of the big oak tree.

After swinging high toward the clouds, you will start to feel a little bit sleepy and want to snuggle under the softest patchwork quilt. You will climb onto the big sofa and pull the blankets up to your chin.

As you tuck in for a cozy nap, Grandpa will start to hum a quiet lullaby that makes you feel safe and loved. The house will grow quiet as the afternoon sun dances across the floorboards.

When you wake up from your nap and see Grandpa sitting there waiting for you, chances are you will want to reach out your arms. And if you reach out your arms, you will want to give him another big hug.
