**The Little Girl from Beijing** Once upon a time, in the busy, beautiful city of Beijing, there lived a little Chinese girl named Mei Mei. Mei Mei had bright eyes, quick feet, and a laugh that sounded like little bells. She lived with her grandma, who raised her with warm hugs, bedtime stories, and delicious meals in their cozy home. Grandma was a wonderful cook. Every morning, the kitchen smelled like warm soy milk, steamed buns, noodles, and sizzling dumplings. Mei Mei loved Beijing food, especially zhajiangmian with thick noodles and savory sauce. “More noodles, Grandma!” Mei Mei would say, holding up her little bowl. Grandma would laugh and say, “A Beijing girl must eat well so she can grow strong!” Mei Mei would take a big bite, get sauce on her cheeks, and ask for more. Every day, Mei Mei walked to school with her little red backpack. She liked school because she could learn songs, draw pictures, and play with her friends during recess. But one afternoon, after the school bell rang, Mei Mei followed a group of older children through the wrong gate. She thought they were going to the front of the school, but instead, they walked toward a busy street filled with bicycles, cars, and people. Soon, Mei Mei looked around and realized she did not recognize anything. The alleyways were different. The buildings were different. The school was nowhere to be seen. Mei Mei’s heart began to beat fast. “Grandma?” she whispered. But Grandma was not there. Mei Mei stood near a small steamed bun shop and tried to be brave. She remembered what Grandma always told her: “If you are lost, stay in one safe place. Do not keep walking.” So Mei Mei stayed right where she was. She held her backpack straps tightly and waited. At home, Grandma noticed Mei Mei was late and became worried. Grandpa quickly put on his shoes and hurried to the school. He asked the teachers. He asked the guards. He walked down the hutong, calling, “Mei Mei! Mei Mei!” For one long hour, everyone searched. Finally, Grandpa turned a corner near the steamed bun shop and saw a small girl with a red backpack standing very still. “Mei Mei!” Grandpa called. Mei Mei looked up. “Grandpa!” She ran as fast as she could into his arms. Grandpa hugged her tightly, and Mei Mei finally began to cry. “I got lost,” she said. “I found you,” Grandpa said gently. “And you were very smart to stay in one place.” That evening, Grandpa brought Mei Mei home. Grandma hugged her again and again. Then she made Mei Mei’s favorite dinner: warm zhajiangmian, dumplings, and a bowl of soup. Mei Mei took one bite and smiled. “Hungry?” Grandma asked. Mei Mei nodded. “Yes,” she said. “I am a strong Beijing girl.” Grandma and Grandpa laughed, and Mei Mei felt safe, loved, and home again.
