The Fruit of the Spirit - Patience It was a bright and beautiful day in the park. Paula (a 7 year old black girl with natural poofy hair separated into two on each side), skipped happily along the path, surrounded by colorful butterflies fluttering through the air. “Wow,” she said, watching them with wide eyes. “Look at these butterflies! They are so pretty. I could watch them all day.” As she continued walking, Paula noticed a small caterpillar inching its way toward her. She knelt down and smiled. “Hey, little fella. Did you know that you’re going to be just as beautiful as those butterflies?” She gently picked up the caterpillar and held it close. “Don’t worry,” she whispered. “I’ll help you.” Just then, the words from her favorite lesson echoed in her mind — “Patience.” Paula carried the caterpillar over to her mom, who was sitting nearby. “Mom! Look what I found!” Her mom leaned in and smiled. “A caterpillar! He’s so cute.” “I’m going to help him turn into a beautiful butterfly,” Paula said proudly. “That’s nice of you, Paula,” Mom replied, “but he doesn’t really need your help.” Paula leaned closer to the caterpillar and whispered, “She doesn’t understand.” Back in her room, Paula placed the caterpillar carefully inside a jar. “Here you go,” she said. “I’ll go get you some leaves.” The next day, Paula looked at the jar with excitement. “Wow, you’re getting bigger!” she said. “Paula!” her mom called from downstairs. “Coming!” Paula shouted back. By the third day, Paula looked puzzled. “Shouldn’t you be in your cocoon now? I guess I’ll get you more leaves.” On the fourth day, Paula ran to the jar and gasped. The caterpillar had finally formed its cocoon. “YES! You did it!” she cheered. “Don’t come out yet — I have to get my camera!” She hurried away, came back with her camera, and pointed it toward the jar. “Okay, you can come out now.” Paula waited, tapping lightly on the glass. “Any day now,” she said impatiently, tapping again. Her mom walked in and frowned. “What are you doing? You could hurt him.” “It’s taking so long,” Paula complained. “If you bother him, it could slow down the process,” her mom said gently. “Just let him be. It’s getting late — let’s have dinner and go to bed.” By the seventh day, Paula sighed as she looked at the still cocoon. “I guess today is still not the day.” Two days later, she glared at the jar. “Really, caterpillar? What is taking you so long?” Her mom, folding laundry, looked up. “You can’t rush nature, Paula. God has a plan for everything. Just practice patience.” “I know,” Paula said. “But I really, really want to see him become a butterfly.” “I know, sweetie,” Mom replied with a smile. “And I’m sure he wants to be a butterfly too. The Lord says, if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.” Paula nodded. “Okay. I will try to practice patience.” On the tenth day, Paula looked at the jar and smiled. “You take your time. I’ll be right here.” Time passed. The clock ticked softly as Paula found ways to keep herself busy — reading, drawing, and playing. Eventually, she fell asleep beside the jar. Two days later, her alarm rang. She sat up quickly and gasped — the cocoon was moving! “He’s moving!” she exclaimed. “You can do it!” Moments later, the cocoon split open, and a beautiful butterfly emerged, fluttering gracefully around the room. Paula clapped her hands in joy. “Yes! Patience truly is a virtue!” As she watched the butterfly fly out the window, she smiled and said softly, “Inspired by the story of the butterfly.” The End.
