The Secret Under the Marula Tree Thando and her little brother Sipho lived in a small village in Zululand. Behind their house stood an enormous marula tree, and every afternoon the two children played there. One hot Tuesday, Thando heard a strange sound. “Listen,” she whispered. “Something is tapping underneath the tree.” Tap, tap, tap. Sipho's eyes grew very wide. “It must be a ghost!” he gasped. “Ghosts do not tap,” said Thando, although her knees were quite wobbly. She crept closer and knelt in the sand. Between the roots lay an old wooden box. “That is my toy box!” said Sipho. “I left it here last week.” The tapping was coming from inside. Thando took a deep breath and lifted the lid. Sitting inside was a tiny tortoise, knocking its shell against the wood. Sipho was too excited to stay quiet and burst out laughing. “A ghost with a shell!” The children carried the tortoise home carefully in Thando's hat. At the gate stood Gogo, wiping her tears. “Mpisi!” she cried. “He has been missing since Monday. I looked everywhere, inside and outside, even in the chicken coop!” Gogo hugged both children tightly. “You are the bravest detectives in the village,” she said. That evening, Mpisi munched his favourite lettuce, and Thando and Sipho agreed that the best mysteries are solved by kind and curious hearts.
