The Bear Who Was Afraid of Everything

Barnaby was a very large bear with a very small heart for adventure. While other bears climbed tall trees and splashed in the rushing river, Barnaby preferred to stay tucked inside his cozy cave with his favorite soft blanket pulled up to his chin.

When the sun dipped below the horizon and the shadows grew long, Barnaby’s tummy would do nervous flips. The dark forest looked like a collection of spooky giants to him, and he would squeeze his eyes shut tight until the morning light returned.

One afternoon, a sudden crack of thunder echoed through the valley, making the ground shake beneath Barnaby's paws. The big bear let out a tiny whimper and hid under his bed, certain that the loud noises were chasing him.

Beyond the familiar rocks of his home lay a sparkling meadow filled with wildflowers, but Barnaby was too afraid to visit. He worried that new places held unknown dangers that a big, timid bear simply could not handle alone.

A tiny mouse named Pip scurried into the cave, carrying a single bright berry and a wide, friendly smile. Even though Pip was small enough to fit in the palm of Barnaby’s paw, he stood tall and greeted the giant bear with a fearless, happy squeak.

Seeing Barnaby’s trembling paws, Pip caught a glowing firefly in a hollow acorn and handed it to his new friend. The tiny light chased away the heavy shadows, showing Barnaby that the dark wasn't so scary when you had a little light and a friend to guide you.

When the wind began to howl and the trees started to creak with loud noises, Pip taught Barnaby a cheerful whistling song. Together, they made such happy music that the scary sounds outside began to feel like a drum beat for their own little parade.

With a gentle tug on Barnaby’s fur, Pip encouraged the bear to take one small, brave step outside the cave entrance. Barnaby felt his heart racing, but seeing Pip’s confidence gave him the strength to keep his paws moving forward into the unknown.

They finally reached the great meadow, where the soft grass tickled Barnaby’s toes and the air smelled like sweet honey and sunshine. Barnaby realized that the world was full of beautiful things, and he would have missed them all if he had stayed hidden in his cave.

As the moon rose over the peaceful valley, Barnaby and Pip sat side-by-side watching the stars twinkle in the sky. Barnaby wasn't afraid of everything anymore, because he knew that even the smallest friend could help you find the biggest courage.
