It was November, and our little Andy was coming home from school after a long day. Andy is a 10 years old boy, who has a lot of friends. He is in the football team, sport that brought him and Mac very close together. Mac is his best friend. At least, that`s what he thought. Andy was walking home happy to see Buster, his golden-furred puppy. Buster wasn’t just a pet; he was his absolute best friend. But the moment Andy opened the backyard gate, he froze. The yard was completely empty, and the door was wide open. His mother met him with worried eyes and shared the bad news: during the heavy thunderstorm at noon, a terrifying clap of thunder had scared Buster so much that he jumped the fence and ran away. Andy immediately ran out into the street, where he bumped into his group of friends from school. With a trembling voice, he told them what had happened and begged for their help. He felt so scared for his pet… He could be anywhere! "Forget about him, Andy!" Mac said, shrugging his shoulders. "He’s just a dog. He`s not even that important. There are a lot of other dogs. It's not worth ruining your fancy clothes in the mud." "Yeah, plus your dog was pretty ugly. It`s an opportunity to get a prettier one," another one added. Andy’s heart sank. For a moment, he hesitated, thinking about the impression they might create about him. Then he realized that there is no time for such stuff. “Mac, but you know how important Buster was for me! You can’t do that to me!” Andy shouted to his friend. He felt so disappointed and betrayed. Mac was his best friend? How can he be so indifferent? Andy turn his back to the group and walked away. Even if he went trough so many emotions, he decided to find Buster by himself. No matter how much is going to be judged for that. His dog is more important. "Be brave, little man!" Andy whispered to himself—a phrase his father always told him whenever things got tough. He searched for hours. He called out Buster's name until his throat hurt, pushing through the bushes and thick mud left behind by the storm. He started panicking: “What if he’s gone forever? “ With tears in his eyes and a small piece of hope, he kept searching. Two hours had passed when, from somewhere deep in the woods near the edge of the neighborhood, Andy heard a faint, weak bark. He ran as fast as his legs could carry him toward the river. There, his heart almost stopped. Buster fell into the river! The water was high and rushing wildly after the storm, and the poor pup was barely holding on to a slippery rock with his front paws. He was completely exhausted and shivering from the cold. Andy felt panic take over. The water looked freezing, deep, and dangerous. He was terrified. But when he looked into Buster's scared eyes, he knew there was no time to hesitate. He took a deep breath and told himself once more: “Be brave, little man!” Forgetting all his fear, Andy jumped into the ice-cold water. When he finally reached Buster, he grabbed him tightly in his arms and pushed back toward the grass. Soaking wet and shivering, Andy and Buster were finally together. The puppy licked Andy's face, which was covered in tears and mud. They were safe. As he walked back home with Buster by his side, Andy realized a few very important things: Pride isn't everything: It didn't matter at all anymore that his friends might judge him or laugh at him for getting dirty over "just a dog."
