Pietie, his friend Khosi, and Pietie's aunt set off on a sunny walk to the neighborhood store. The boys are excited for their outing, chatting happily as they walk side by side along the sidewalk under the bright blue sky.
They reach a street corner where a tall, black pole stands with three round eyes staring down at them. Aunt stops the boys and points to the traffic light, explaining that these colorful eyes help keep everyone safe on the busy road.
The pole has three glowing colors: red means stop, orange means wait, and green means go. When the light finally turns green, Pietie starts to step forward into the road, eager to reach the other side and get to the shop.
Suddenly, a car zooms by, nearly brushing against Pietie because he forgot to look around before stepping off the curb. Aunt gently pulls him back and teaches the boys the golden rule: Stop, Look, and Listen to the right, the left, and the right again for any coming cars.
A little further down the street, they find wide white stripes painted across the black asphalt like the patterns on a zebra. Aunt explains that this is a Zebra Crossing, a special and safe place designed specifically for people to walk across the road.
Khosi feels a burst of energy and tries to run across the street to reach the shop faster. Aunt stops him immediately, explaining that running is dangerous because you might trip; you must always walk calmly while keeping your eyes on the traffic.
Inside the bright and colorful shop, the boys find exactly what they were looking for: a special book filled with pictures about road safety. They proudly take it to the counter, excited to learn even more about how to be safe pedestrians.
On their way home, they encounter the tall pole again, and this time the light is a firm, glowing red. Pietie and Khosi shout STOP together, waiting patiently for the green light and checking both ways carefully before they start walking again.
Once they are safely back at home, Pietie sits down and immediately opens his new book to look at the colorful pages. He excitedly tells his mother all about the traffic lights, the zebra crossing, and the important safety rules he learned today.
Pietie and Khosi are now road safety experts who know how to stay safe while having fun outdoors. Be like Pietie and Khosi by always following the road safety rules whenever you go on an adventure.
