The Great Firehouse Mix-Up A Bobby and Matrix Story Meet Bobby and Matrix. They are brothers, and they are Dalmatians. Bobby is fast, loud, and always ready for an adventure. He leaps before he looks. Matrix is quiet, thoughtful, and likes things to be perfectly organized. He looks very closely before he leaps. Today is a very special day. It is the best day ever for a Dalmatian. “Are you ready, boys?” asks their owner. Bobby barks a happy, bouncy bark. Matrix gives a single, serious nod. They are going to visit the local firehouse! The firehouse is huge. It smells like engine oil, soapy water, and bravery. Chief Miller meets them at the big red doors. He has a mustache that looks like a fuzzy caterpillar. “Welcome to Station Number Nine!” booms Chief Miller. “Who wants a tour?” First, they see the fire engine. It is redder than a strawberry and shinier than a new penny. Bobby tries to sniff the giant tires. He wants to climb right into the driver’s seat! Matrix admires the hoses. They are rolled up in perfect, tidy circles. Matrix loves tidy circles. Next, Chief Miller takes them to the gear room. “This is where our firefighters keep their boots, coats, and helmets,” the Chief explains. “Everything must be ready to go in a second.” Matrix sighs happily. Every helmet is straight. Every boot is paired. It is the most organized room he has ever seen. “Excuse me for one moment,” says Chief Miller, stepping into the hallway to speak with their owner. Bobby cannot resist. He just wants to smell the shiny gold badge on the nearest helmet. He stretches his neck. He stands on his tippy-toes. He wobbles. “Bobby, be careful,” warns Matrix. CRASH! BANG! CLATTER! Bobby loses his balance and tumbles right into the rack. Helmets bounce across the floor. Boots tumble through the air. Coats slide into a giant, yellow puddle. Bobby sits in the middle of the mess, looking very guilty. “Oh no,” whimpers Bobby. “I ruined the perfect room.” Before Matrix can answer, a loud noise fills the air. RING! RING! RING! “It is a practice drill!” barks Matrix. “The firefighters are coming!” Bobby panics. “What do we do? They will not have their gear!” Matrix takes a deep breath. He looks at the pile. He looks at his brother. “We are Dalmatians,” Matrix says bravely. “We have the best noses in the world. We can fix this.” Matrix explains the plan. “Every firefighter smells different. Sniff the boots, find the matching coat, and put the helmet on top!” Bobby nods. He dives into the pile. Sniff, sniff. “This one smells like peppermint soap!” Bobby says, tossing a boot to the left. Sniff, sniff. “This one smells like pine needles!” Matrix says, pushing a coat to the right. They work faster than they have ever worked before. Bobby tosses. Matrix sorts. They slide helmets across the slippery floor. Just as they push the very last boot into place, the heavy doors swing open. The firefighters rush in! The firefighters do not even notice the puppies. They are too fast. They grab their boots. They grab their coats. They grab their helmets. Everything fits perfectly. The peppermint boots go with the peppermint coat. They slide down the brass pole and jump onto the shiny red engine. The drill is a success! Chief Miller walks back into the room. “Well, that was a fast drill!” he says. Bobby steps forward. His tail is tucked between his legs. “Chief Miller,” Bobby whines softly. “I made a big mess. I knocked over all the gear.” Matrix steps up beside his brother. “But we worked together to put it back,” Matrix adds. Chief Miller looks surprised, and then he smiles a very big smile. “You made a mistake, Bobby, but you told the truth,” the Chief says. “And you both used teamwork to solve the problem.” He reaches into his pocket and pulls out two shiny plastic badges. “That makes you true heroes,” Chief Miller says. “Honorary Fire Dogs of Station Number Nine!” Bobby and Matrix trot home side by side, their badges gleaming in the afternoon sun. Bobby learned that it is always best to tell the truth, even when it is hard. And Matrix learned that the best kind of teamwork starts with your brother.
